Genuine collaboration with the community is fundamental at every stage of our design process. It enables us to create unique places and spaces that powerfully express their cultural identity, ensuring social, economic and environmental outcomes become tangible. To this end, the practice has developed a 'participatory design' process – a collaborative, bottom-up approach that actively involves the local community, end-users and stakeholders in the conception, development and management of a project to gain a deeper understanding of people's real needs.

Each of our projects takes into account context, bioclimatic factors and the sustainable use of materials, resources and renewable energy. We focus on minimising environmental impact whilst optimising living comfort and well-being, to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in line with 2050 net-zero carbon goals. We provide expert professional services for any project where an NZEB or LEED rating is required. Additionally, our design process for building refurbishment aims to enhance, reuse, transform and regenerate the built environment, fully respecting the existing structure while embedding core sustainability principles.

‍ One cannot think about architecture without thinking about people

Giuseppe is the Founding Director of Giuseppe Piovaccari Architect, with over 20 years of experience in architectural research, community architecture, interiors and holistic sustainability.

After graduating in Architecture from the Politecnico di Milano in 2003, Giuseppe worked alongside Emilio Battisti, collaborating on various urban and architectural designs, as well as a university research project entitled “Zero Energy Building”. This project aimed to design affordable, alternative housing models in Milan and Perth, Australia.

In 2006, he founded his own studio, developing and delivering a range of community architecture projects. Mostly funded by private clients, foundations and municipalities, these works focused particularly on the residential, cultural and educational spheres, with several projects receiving prestigious awards.

Throughout his practice, Giuseppe has maintained an ongoing interest in adaptive reuse within the built heritage environment. By critically analysing existing structures, he manages all aspects of architectural design, with a strong emphasis on recycling and sustainability. Giuseppe’s designs always respect the physical and social context while adopting innovative spatial solutions. He pays special attention to the bioclimatic context, using materials, resources, technologies and renewable energy to minimise environmental impact while optimising human comfort.

His most significant projects include the Children's Recreational Centre in Barisciano (L'Aquila, Italy), the Eco-centre in Havana (Cuba), the Affordable Housing Complex in Busto Arsizio (Varese, Italy) – in collaboration with MTA Associati – and “Borgo Tinasso Kindergarten” in Sanremo (Italy), in collaboration with architect Enrico Bona.

Giuseppe obtained his PhD in Architecture, Building, Urban Planning and Landscape from the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Spain, in 2017. He has extensive experience in university teaching and research. As a project manager, he operates at both national and international levels, with substantial expertise in leading and collaborating within multidisciplinary teams. He has also been invited to speak at international conferences in Cuba, New Zealand and China.
